    EF Advanced Diploma in English for International Communications

    Acquire high-caliber language skills for the international world. You'll earn an EF Diploma and US university transfer credit from Hult International Business School.

    Program Profile*:

    Secure US university transfer credit for future studies
    Take all required Hult-credit courses during your nine-month program and earn up to 15 university transfer credits. On the six-month program, you'll earn up to 9 transfer credits by completing all the Hult-approved courses.

    Study on a university affiliated program
    Challenge your English by taking subject courses that are offered at the first-year university level. Benefit from a professional program of study that draws on the distinguished experience of Hult International Business School, which was named by the Financial Times to the list of 100 Top Business Schools in 2011.

    Earn an EF Advanced Diploma or Advanced Certificate
    The EF Advanced Diploma is awarded to students following a nine-month or eleven-month program.
    The EF Advanced Certificate is awarded to students following a six-month program.

    Core Credit Courses

    The International Communications program includes five electives and two required courses (see below). Availability may vary.

    General English Studies
    At the basis of every EF Advanced Diploma Program is a solid course of ongoing General English study at the student's individual level of language placement. This course develops students' English proficiency to promote independent communication, confidence, and cirtical thinking. This is a required course.

    Introduction to International Communications Studies
    This is a required foundation course for the EF Advanced Diploma Program. It is offered during the first term. Valuable tools will be taught to develop listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills for communicating at an international level. Lessons will be taught in the context of a long-term project and will survey valuable academic, professional and international topics.

    Academic Writing
    Designed to assist students in becoming competent and confident writers for academic purposes, this course focuses on all the necessary steps in writing for university level coursework. Students will learn to brainstorm, draft, proofread, edit, revise, and present a final product. Attention will be paid to issues of research, referencing, plagiarism and style.

    Information Literacy
    This course is designed to assist students in developing skills that will enable them to function as information-literate individuals capable of using and applying current information technology. Students will develop skills in acquiring information; learn effective searching, evaluation or information and use of the internet. They will also discuss the implications of living in a digital society.

    Cross-Cultural Communication
    This course is designed to offer a theoretical basis through a hands-on approach to the concept of cross-cultural learning and communications. Practical examples from students' daily lives abroad will constitute the basis for discussions and role plays, at the same time emphasizing the general applicability of the concepts and skills they will acquire to any intercultural context.

    Regional Cultural Studies
    In order to understand the local culture and the underlying values of society, one must integrate fully into the community. This course will look at history, arts, culture and current events that shape the regional society with the goal of leveraging this knowledge to assist in integration at the local level and subsequently to improve skills in language and cultural acquisition.

    Effective Writing
    The emphasis of this course is to facilitate students in writing clearly, effectively and interestingly for a variety of purposes and audiences. Writing workshops, exercises and revision of grammar points along with regular writing assignments encourage practice in each step of the writing process. Key language exam practice tests will be used to hone writing skills further.

    Business Fundamentals
    With the goal of assisting students in becoming competent and confident participants in the international corporate world, this course explores strategies and knowledge needed to interact professionally and successfully in business environments. Topic-focused lessons provide a survey of various fields and functions of business.

    Public Speaking
    Students will learn how to appropriately choose and research a topic, give persuasive and informative presentations, and to speak with confidence. Time will be given to the "mechanics" of presentations, as well as to how to delegate tasks in a group. By the end of the term, students will be ready to present in English in a manner appropriate for the university level.

    Business Topics
    Through reading and discussing actual Harvard Business Publishing Case Studies, students will learn about and apply various business tools, such as: SWOT analysis, 'The Five Ms', the Porter Model and basic financial calculations. Students will strengthen necessary professional language skills through project-based work, group case and analysis and oral presentations.

    Communication Strategies
    This course is designed to assist students in becoming competent, confident and independent communicators, through the building of communication skills in strategy and critical thinking. In this course students will be developing fluency over a range of language functions, building the ability to be concrete and abstract, as well as to use language in a creative and flexible way.

    Journalism and Media Studies
    Introducing students to the fundamentals of journalism and mass communication, this course provides a solid theoretical and practical foundation in the field. The curriculum is designed to enhance all four language skills - reading, writing, listening and speaking - so that students become more effective consumers and communicators of mass communication.

    Film Studies
    The main focus of this course is to introduce students to the study of film. Through the systematic study of the stages of film production, students will address creativity, language, organization and teamwork through the task of designing, creating and making a short film. Students will be involved in all aspects of the creative process.

    Global Issues
    Encouraging students to explore a variety of world issues in a global context, this introductory course addresses controversial international issues with respectful and open analysis. Particular areas of emphasis include global resources; globalization and trade; global conflict and negotiation; international development; human rights and social injustice; and global communication.

    Regional Literature Studies
    This course provides students with a unique chance to learn about the literary world in the context of their language studies and study abroad experience. Through reading literature, students can come to a greater understanding of the time periods in question while simultaneously gaining a better understanding of the context of local culture and language.

    People & Places
    Through discussions and implementation of supplementary projects, students will be exposed to a rich introduction to human culture. The course will expand students' world view by presenting an array of topics related to the phenomenon of culture and cultivate understanding of the history of humanity and differences in global cultures.

    Admissions   

    Placement test
    Before being accepted to the program, you will be required to take an admissions placement test. You will need to test into the Common European Framework for Language Reference (CEFR) Level B1 for the International Communications Program.

    High School Diploma or equivalent
    In order to be eligible for US university transfer credit, you will need to submit a copy of your high school diploma equivalent.
